M.C. Cash Student Honored With Special Education Award

M.C. Cash student Luis Reyes-Serna was honored by the Arizona Council for Exceptional Children with the “I Can Do It!” award. This award recognizes students for excelling, despite their disability, in a wide range of areas including academics, art, community service, self-advocacy, and technology.  Luis was honored at the Council’s annual conference.

State Testing Begins April 17

Laveen schools will begin administering state achievement testing in April. Students in Grades 3-8 will take Arizona’s Measurement of Educational Readiness to Inform Teaching (AzMERIT). The AzMERIT test measures students’ skills in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics. Students in 4th and 8th grade will continue to take the AIMS science test, in addition to AzMERIT. Students who are enrolled in an Algebra or Geometry class, will also take an AzMERIT end of course (EOC) assessment. Thanks to the continued support of our community, Laveen School District will to administer the AzMERIT assessment via its online platform.

Preschool Registration Begins April 10

The Laveen Elementary School District will be opening two preschool programs on the campus of Paseo Pointe School in August 2017.

One will be part of the school’s Dual Language Immersion program where students will receive instruction in two languages. The other will be an English instruction preschool. Both are open to children that are four and five years old. Three-year-olds may be accepted depending on available space.

Both programs are available to families living within the Laveen Elementary School District. Children residing outside of the district boundaries may also attend as long as space permits.

Registration for these two programs will open April 10, 2017. Registration must be completed at the Kids Klub office which is located at Desert Meadows School. Hours are 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

You must bring the following documents at time of registration:

  • Completed Enrollment Packet
  • Immunization Record
  • Official Birth Certificate
  • Parent/Guardian Photo ID
  • $130 (Registration fee of $65 and Supply fee of $65)

Placement is on a first come, first served basis and priority will be given to children ages 4 and 5. Registration fees will be held for children who are three years old until they are officially enrolled.

3rd Annual Spring Arts Festival is April 7

Join us for the 3rd Annual Laveen Spring Arts Festival on April 7. The event will feature numerous arts and crafts vendors, craft activities for children, Laveen student performances, and food. Entrance to the event is free. Tickets will be sold to participate in the activities.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Foundation which provides scholarships to Laveen 8th grade students entering high school and former Laveen students entering college.

The event takes place from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Laveen Education Center Lawn, 5001 W. Dobbins.

Social Studies Adoption Committee Considers New Curriculum

The district social studies adoption committee has been meeting regularly since December, 2016 to review potential curriculum which is intended to support social studies content teachers in grades 6th-8th.
This process has involved representatives from all schools with an excellent opportunity to research and evaluate social studies programs for the 2017-18 school year.

Kindergarten Round Up for Students Starting in August 2017 is February 7

Parents with students starting Kindergarten in August 2017 are invited to register their child during our annual Kindergarten Round Up event on February 7 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. You will also have the opportunity to meet the teachers and visit kindergarten classrooms. Children registered on this date will receive a free gift.

Registration will take place at the following Laveen schools: Cheatham, Desert Meadows, Laveen, M.C. Cash, Paseo Pointe, Rogers Ranch, and Trailside Point. Kindergartners enrolled at Paseo Pointe must be part of the Dual Language Immersion program, a 50/50 model where students spend half their day in a classroom where teaching and learning is conducted in Spanish and the other half in English.

Students may be enrolled in any of our schools regardless of where they live, space permitting. Families living outside of a particular school’s transportation zone will be responsible for providing transportation.

Please bring the following items to register your child.
* Proof of Residence (examples include: utility bill, rental agreement, mortgage statement, etc.)
* Child’s Immunization Record
* Child’s Original Birth Certificate (copies not accepted)
* Parent/Guardian’s Photo ID

Children must be 5 years old on or before August 31, 2016 to register. Children turning 5 after August 31, but by December 31, may be evaluated for early entrance at a later date.

Laveen offers free Full Day Kindergarten at all schools.

You can support Laveen extracurricular activities while reducing the amount you owe on your 2016 taxes through a tax credit contribution. Tax credit contributions may only be used to support character education and fee-based extracurricular activities such as after-school tutoring and clubs, academic enrichment, field trips, fine art programs, and athletics.
